 Bass Ma Boom ?Actif depuis plus de quinze ans sur les scènes d’Europe et d’Amérique du Nord au sein de diverses formations, le bassiste, auteur-compositeur, réalisateur et DJ Vander se consacre de plus en plus à sa première passion musicale : le dub. Son style est largement influencé par le travail des King Tubby, Lee « Scratch » Perry, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Sly & Robbie, mais ne rejette ni sa culture francophone, ni les métissages que permet l’universalité de la musique. Bassist, singer/songwriter, DJ and producer Vander has been active in various groups for over 15 years on the European and the North American scenes. He’s now increasingly dedicated to the musical genre he first fell in love with—dub. Inspired by King Tubby, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Linton Kwesi Johnson and Sly & Robbie, his style reflects his francophone roots while leaving plenty of room for mixing, a natural product of the universality of music. Biographie (English version below) C’est dans sa Belgique natale que débute la carrière de Vander (André Vanderbiest). En 1992, avec le guitariste Arnaud Bourgis, il fonde Les Frères Brozeur, pères de la « variété alternative ». En tant que bassiste et auteur-compositeur, Vander participe aux trois premiers albums du groupe et à plus de 300 spectacles en Europe et au Québec. Parallèlement, d’autres projets voient le jour : Los Tres Varietos (avec Didier Odieu) et le Brussel Zot Club (avec Frédéric « Frouch » Dailly), dont la chanson Les Frites a été rééditée en 2003 en Belgique. En 1996, il s’installe à Montréal pour se joindre aux Colocs. Membre à part entière du groupe, il agit à titre de bassiste et auteur-compositeur sur Dehors Novembre, paru en 1998; le son de sa basse et ses arrangements donnent leur saveur reggae-dub à plusieurs titres de l’album, qui connaît un immense succès, notamment la chanson Tassez-vous de d’là, dont Vander a coécrit la musique. À la suite du suicide tragique, en 2000, d’André « Dédé » Fortin, leader des Colocs, Vander coréalise avec Mike Sawatzky un dernier album des Colocs dit posthume, Suite 2116. De 2000 à 2002, Vander accompagne Stefie Shock sur scène. En 2002, il sort son premier album solo, Vander et du beau monde, mélange de chanson française, de jazz et de diverses sonorités world, toujours sur fond reggae-dub. Le groupe se produit notamment au festival Coup de coeur francophone en 2001 et en 2002, ainsi qu’aux FrancoFolies en 2002. Au fil des spectacles, Vander délaisse quelque peu la chanson pour prendre une direction nettement plus dub; Vander et du beau monde devient Vander Dub Expérience, et fait une large place à l’improvisation et aux musiciens invités. C’est dans cet esprit que Vander et Borza Ghomeshi coréalisent en 2003 ReDub Chroniques, réunissant 11 artistes de tous les horizons musicaux (Richard Desjardins, Marie-Jo Thério, Jim Corcoran, les sœurs McGarrigle, etc.) sur un même album ayant pour trame de fond le dub. La même année, Vander Dub Expérience se produit au Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, et ReDub est présenté au festival Coup de coeur francophone. En 2004, l’album Mossman meets Vander / Montréal Dub Sound System paraît sur le label indépendant Bass ma Boom nouvellement créé par Vander. Depuis, en plus de collaborer au projet Folk Off de Simon Jodoin et d’accompagner Ghislain Poirier sur scène, Vander propage dub et reggae avec son Bass ma Boom sound system, auquel se greffent d’autres musiciens et chanteurs – et même des écrivains, dans le cadre d’événements mariant dub et littérature (Festival international de littérature en 2005, Salon du livre de Québec en 2006). In 1992, he founded Les Frères Brozeur (the fathers of the alternative variety genre) with guitarist Arnaud Bourgis. As the group’s bassist and songwriter, Vander collaborated on its first three albums and appeared in over 300 shows across Europe and in Quebec. In 1996, he moved to Montreal to join Les Colocs. As a full member of the group, he played bass and wrote songs on 1998’s Dehors Novembre—his basslines and arrangements gave several tracks the reggae-dub flavour that helped make the album a huge hit, including the song Tassez-vous de d’là, which Vander co-wrote. After the tragic suicide of Les Colocs front man André “Dédé” Fortin in 2000, Vander joined forces with Mike Sawatzky to produce the final, posthumous Colocs record, Suite 2116. From 2000 to 2002, Vander toured with Stefie Shock’s band. In 2002, he released his first solo effort, Vander et du beau monde, a mix of French chanson, jazz and various world beat sounds, with reggae-dub as a backdrop. The group performed at such events as Coup de coeur francophone (2001 and 2002) and Les FrancoFolies (2002). Over time, Vander began to move away from chanson in favour of a decidedly more dub sound—Vander et du beau monde soon morphed into Vander Dub Expérience to take on a much more improvisational approach involving guest musicians. It is in that same spirit of collaboration that Vander and Borza Ghomeshi co-produced 2003’s collective ReDub Chroniques, bringing together 11 artists from all over the musical map (such as Richard Desjardins, Marie-Jo Thério, Jim Corcoran, and the McGarrigle Sisters) on an album with dub as a foundation. That same year, Vander Dub Expérience played the Montreal International Jazz Festival, while ReDub took the stage as part of Coup de coeur francophone. In 2004, Mossman meets Vander / Montréal Dub Sound System was released on the indie label Bass ma Boom, Vander’s latest venture. Since then, other than collaborating on the Simon Jodoin project Folk Off, and playing live with Ghislain Poirier, Vander has continued to spread the reggae and dub message with Bass ma Boom sound system—joining other singers, musicians, and even authors for a series of special events blending dub and literary readings (Festival international de littérature in 2005; Salon du livre de Québec in 2006).
